UN expert Dr. Heba Hagrass, the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at the United Nations, is participating in the 17th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which kicks off today at the United Nations headquarters in New York. She delivered a speech at the opening session of the session, in addition to her participation in a number of side events on the sidelines of the session, and held working meetings on the latest developments in disability issues globally with a number of international and regional leaders concerned.

Dr. Heba Hagrass’ office announced that the side events she will participate in include a high-level side event organized by the Arab League under the title “Invisible Barriers: Wasting the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Gaza: A Glimmer of Hope”, where prominent figures will participate, in addition to her participation in another event organized by the Maltese mission, ESCWA, and the Jazam International Organization on promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in decent work and sustainable livelihoods.

The Special Rapporteur’s office explained that during her participation, Dr. Heba Hagrass will meet with a large number of international and regional figures concerned, and will discuss with them mechanisms to support the rights of persons with disabilities on various levels, and ways to support cooperation between her office and international and regional organizations concerned with disability issues, thus enhancing wider implementation.
